$*$ Razer Naga MMOG Laser Gaming Mouse

I recently purchased the Razer Naga mouse so I cannot comment to the longevity of the device. Overall I am pleased with my initial testing of the device and would recommend it to any MMO-gamer and casual user alike as long as they can overlook a few (mostly software related) failures.

Build and Design:

The first thing I noticed when unpacking the device was that the main body of the mouse is a glossy black plastic which I always associate with a feel and look of cheapness. Thankfully I was impressed with other physical aspects of the mouse. The USB cable was braided instead of plastic and had a gold-plated connector which is a nice bonus as higher grade wiring typically isn't found on many consumer products in this range. The top of the mouse has a rubberized coating that creates a nice feel and gives a bit of friction and grip. All buttons on the mouse take an appropriate amount of pressure to push and give nice feedback. In addition to the normal buttons on a mouse you have 2 buttons by the left click that are defaulted to being forward/backward, as well as a 12 number thumb-pad on the left side of the mouse which defaults to being the top number row (Has 2 settings that you can toggle on the mouse, second setting default is the numpad keys). There are slight variations in brightness in the Blue LED lighting on the thumb-pad on my device that the average person might not notice but none are too dim and the LEDs are mostly for fashion so it doesn't effect the usability of the device. Other reviews I've read note that the mouse is "warm" though with normal use I haven't found this to be true. The "warmth" they note is from having your hands (especially your thumb) over the LEDs for hours at a time and if it is bothersome the LED lighting can be disabled. The mouse has a good weight for it's size though some that like a heavier feel will note there is no cage for adjustable weight like many "gaming" mice have in this price range.

The main point about design is this isn't a normal shaped mouse like some of the pictures may show. The face of the mouse (and thus your hand while cupping the mouse) sets on an angle because the side with the thumb-pad is about a centimeter taller than the other side, which has a small hump on which your ring finger rests. The design is very comfortable for my hand except that you have to get your thumb used to the wider range of motion it has to achieve to hit the buttons which isn't typical in mice and may cause some pain in your thumb until you've gotten used to it. The instructions note that the average person should have to play with the mouse 18 hours and there are "training" tabs included in packaging which are little pieces of plastic to put on the buttons to help your hand learn the positioning if it's too much without them.

Performance: *NOTE the review is on driver version 2.03*

The mouse functions with default settings straight out of the box as to be expected. There is no software disk included with the packaging so you must visit their website to download the newest firmware, drivers, and addons. This is actually not a problem because you should go to the website anyway as packaged drivers are always out of date and the disk just ends up in the trash. The software for customization is easy enough to figure out though options aren't clearly explained for the novice user. You can setup profiles for different configurations. You can adjust the sensitivity and accuracy of the mouse and I'm pleased that it supports separate X and Y axis sensitivity. You can reassign or disable any of the buttons on the mouse which I'm told wasn't available in earlier versions. The list of options for the button assignment include all the common mouse-related functions as well as assigning it to emulate another button on the mouse/key on the keyboard, adjust sensitivity, change your profile, or run a macro you've recorded. I find this portion of the functionality to be very well implemented and useful for just about anyone not just gamers.

The macro creation is not full-featured as of yet so doesn't suit the needs of many users. It is limited to keystrokes with optional time delays in between. I could find no options for toggling macro repeating or anything else. Even editing macros is slow and tedious. This may not be a big deal for even some power users though as you'll likely have a keyboard with advanced macro functions and you can assign the mouse button you'd like to emulate that key, or if it is for gaming then the game itself will likely have a macro system in-game with modifier support anyway that you can bind to one of the mouse buttons. The mouse was designed with gaming in mind so this is forgivable.

World of Warcraft:

I can also comment on their in-game addon suite at least for World of Warcraft. It is a "bar mod" meaning that it replaces the usual action bar at the bottom of the screen and it is kept up-to-date as they release patches for the game. It is surprisingly a well built mod that rivals the usefulness of popular bar management addons, with many options for customization where I was suspecting it to be an unpolished after thought or gimmick selling point. It removes all the "clutter" at the bottom of the screen and replaces the default action bars with little 3x4 cluster-style action bar groups which mimics the layout of the thumb-pad on the mouse which means they suspect you'll bind most things to this thumb-pad (with additional action bars bound via modifiers), though if you like the visual layout you can move the bars around and use it regardless of whether you utilize the thumb-pad or not. It also has additional support for casting bar movement, custom totem bars, and a few other class related options. It's definitely a sweet little perk especially if you plan on heavy utilization of the thumb-pad.
